THE DAILY PRACTICE LOOP

Try, check, remember.

STEP 1

Choose what to practise

Start with Definition questions to practise meanings. Add Synonym questions for words with similar meanings and Antonym questions for opposites. Choose one or more types, and change them whenever you like. Before the first question, set aside the words your child already knows, so the session goes on words that are still new.

STEP 2

Have a go, then learn from it

Pick the best answer, then read the explanation together. Not sure yet? Choose Skip & reveal to learn the answer. Invite your child to explain the word in their own words or use it in a sentence.

STEP 3

Return to words that need practice

Missed and revealed words come back for another try, so you don’t need to keep a separate revision list. Each correct answer adds to your child’s progress. Keep sessions short and encouraging.

PRACTICE WITH A PURPOSE

Tricky words get another chance.

MineWords keeps track of practice and brings missed words back, so you can spend more time discussing meanings and less time deciding what to revise next.

  • Explore more of the collection. Practice favours words seen fewer times and avoids recent repeats where possible, giving your child a wider range to work on.
  • Mistakes lead to another try. Missed and revealed words return after other questions, giving your child a chance to recall what they have learned.
  • Meet words in different ways. When you select more than one question type, MineWords favours the type your child has practised least for that word.
  • See progress build. Answering unhurried and without a clue counts as a sure recall, and 2 sure recalls for Level 0, 3 sure recalls for Levels 1–2 and 4 sure recalls for Levels 3–5 master a word. Right answers in a row master it too, as do 5right answers whenever they come. A clue, a mistake or a reveal starts the count again, and there is no need to rush. This is a practice milestone; keep exploring those words in reading and conversation too.

Progress shows vocabulary practice, not exam readiness. Difficulty levels group vocabulary, not exam grades. Level 0 adds curriculum vocabulary as its own level. Levels 1–5 combine estimated word rarity and letter count. You can leave practice on all levels or choose one level to focus on; either way the same words and saved progress are used.

Set the easy ones aside first

Before your child starts, set aside the words they already know, in Choose which words to practise. Practice time then goes on words that are still new, and nothing is spent on words that never needed the work. A word set aside can be brought back whenever you like.

Focus your revision

Open the word list and choose Needs practice to find words to revisit together. During a full-access trial or with membership, you can export a spreadsheet or print a revision sheet for practice away from the screen.

Make effort visible

Your Learning calendar shows practice days, questions and study time, so children can see their small daily efforts add up. Use it to celebrate taking part and find a routine that works for your family.

Play with the words

Games turns the same collection into Five Letters, synonym and antonym challenges, and mixed practice. Every round ends with the meaning, an example and related words, so a lucky guess still teaches something.

A SIMPLE ROUTINE

Practise first. Then return to books and papers.

After practice, choose one word to talk about or look for in your next reading session. Use MineWords alongside books, schoolwork and exam papers to give vocabulary a regular place in your wider 11+ preparation. To see what the papers ask for, read how the 11+ papers work. Short sessions leave room for everything else.

Try it first. Choose membership when it fits.
